Gig-Work & Platform Deliveries – implications for Road Safety
Tuesday 21 September - 10.00-11.30 am CET
The growth of urban platform deliveries (by Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Amazon, etc.) accelerated during the COVID-19 lockdowns. We now have several thousands of people, all over Europe, delivering pizzas, books, and much more.
They often have to do it fast (nobody likes cold pizza), and recent research shows ‘speedy service’ (expected by platform algorithms) is encouraging risky behaviors. Research also shows the ‘gig workers’ serving these platforms tend to work (very) long hours, which is an additional risk factor, along with the fact that many of them are using bicycles and e-scooters in car-centric urban environments.
In this meeting of the POLIS Working Group for Safety & Security we’ll be addressing this issue and its implications for road safety in cities, as well as exploring what local and regional governments and transport authorities could do.
