PT Lab: Preparing public transport for the age of automation.
27 January 2025 - 14:00-16:00 - Online
This webinar explores the experiences of cities and public transport operators piloting and testing automated vehicles (AVs) on their roads. The European Union has established a legislative framework for vehicle type approval to facilitate the testing of fully automated vehicles on public roads, but its implementation varies significantly across member states, creating notable implications for local authorities.
The session will feature firsthand insights from POLIS members such as EMT Madrid, the City of Helmond, and Ile-de-France Mobilités, sharing their journeys within the context of EU-funded projects like SHOW, AUGMENTED CCAM and FABULOS. Through these case studies, we aim to showcase the diverse strategies employed by cities to integrate AVs into their transportation systems, highlighting the challenges they face and the successes they achieve along the way. To approach a multi-level perspective during this event, presentations will be followed by a discussion panel featuring the previous speakers and joined by representatives from the French Ministry of Transport and the European Commission.
Key questions we’ll address include:
- What are the practical challenges of piloting AVs in public transport in European cities?
- How does national-level implementation of EU legislation impact local initiatives?
- What lessons can be drawn from the pioneering efforts of cities and regions?
The interactive panel discussion will provide a platform for exchanging ideas and strategies, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of this multifaceted topic.

- Gustavo Reyes, Project leader Smart & Green Mobility of Gemeente Helmond
