In-person Active Travel & Health Working Group: Designing for better walking - The CROW Design Manual
25 November 2025 - 9:30-11:30 - Utrecht, The Netherlands
When we walk or wheel, we are fully connected to our environment. We want to keep our freedom to move comfortably without feeling vulnerable. While one person does not take much space, walking and wheeling are also social activities, and we often want to go side by side, stop and talk, and so on. So, how can we design our cities for better walking? Could cycling infrastructure design help us find the right start in this task?
POLIS member CROW has taken this task by the hand and developed a Design Manual for Pedestrians, using their widely known and recognised Design Manual for Bicycle Traffic as an inspiration. So, POLIS is taking the opportunity of being in CROW's hometown to host a joint workshop to present and discuss the Design Manual for Pedestrians.
This workshop will be the opportunity to exchange and explore how the manual presents and tackles the five requirements for designing walking-friendly infrastructure : Directness, Accessibility, Readability, Safety, and Attractiveness. Join us to learn how CROW's expertise has been translated into this new manual to support cities in designing for better walking.
The workshop will be followed by the AGA and the AGA dinner. Participation is encouraged. Please do not forget to register for the AGA, the AGA Dinner and the POLIS Conference here.
