INCLUSION-HiReach final virtual event | Lessons learnt for transferability

Dear reader,

On behalf of the consortium, we are pleased to invite you to read this latest issue of our newsletter. The project ended successfully, despite the challenges that this difficult year created for everyone. COVID-19 and its implications at all levels have created difficult conditions for the transport sector, with significant impacts for the most disadvantaged travellers; especially those living in areas with limited transport.

The challenge for the project was twofold: conducting field research activities became more difficult due to lockdowns; while, on the other hand, we felt it was necessary to enrich our findings with additional studies on related COVID implications while being aware of the still existing uncertainties. With determination, the consortium turned these challenges into opportunities, and we believe that the results achieved at the end will be useful to all stakeholders working for a more inclusive transport system. This newsletter contains references and suggestions and we invite you to have a deeper investigation of our results through the material available on our project website.

More empathy towards vulnerable travellers in Budapest

Thanks to INCLUSION, transport staff in Budapest were trained to increase their competency in recognising and assisting vulnerable users. A crowdsourcing platform was designed to collect feedback and opinions by the users on transport services.

Redesigning bus routes in Florence’s rural areas

Within the INCLUSION project, Busitalia/ATAF successfully developed several initiatives for improving accessibility to Public Transport in two distinct peripheral and rural areas of Florence, targeting vulnerable users, such as people with a migrant background and rural dwellers.

E-bike hire scheme improves access in rural Scotland

In the Cairngorms National Park in remote rural Scotland, a public-private partnership with local bike shops provided a successful and cost-effective mechanism for delivering an e-bike hire scheme, helping young locals access employment and aiding older residents to keep active and healthy.

Improved access for families with children in Rhein-Sieg, Germany

The Pilot Lab Rhein-Sieg focused on the question of which measures help to strengthen the independent mobility of children; not least, in order to reduce the high rate of parents who bring or collect their children too many times.

Two mobile Apps for elderly people and job seeking migrants in Flanders

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, all activities for the Flanders pilot lab were cancelled. The most important conclusion of the pilot labs was that both target groups –elderly people and job seeking migrants - weren’t ready to fully switch over to technological solutions.

SMARTA 2 – Promoting Sustainable Shared Mobility Interconnected with Public Transport in European Rural Areas

Rapid urbanisation and demographic changes lead to low public transport demand in rural areas. As a result, those living there often have to rely on private cars. This in turn contributes to high CO2 emissions and environmental noise. At the same time, it hinders the participation of people who do not own a car in everyday social and economic activities for which commuting is necessary.

AlgoWatt – the INCLUSION project coordinator

AlgoWatt is the INCLUSION Project Coordinator, with overall responsibility for the coordination and liaison with the European Commission. Together with the project management bodies, AlgoWatt has constantly worked to ensure a smooth organisation of the project activities, high-quality results and solid contributions to the objectives and challenges of the project call.
